2016 Skin Olympics: Sun Defenders

2016 Skin Olympics: Sun Defenders

The beach volleyball matches are heating up! While you may not be shoreside in Rio, sun protection is still just as important. By now you know that UV exposure causes premature aging and, worse, significantly increases your risk of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 76,380 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2016.

That’s why in our latest Skin Olympics we’re serving up sunscreens that score high in SPF — and low in greasiness or chalkiness. We did the dirty work, spritzing and slathering, to find formulas you won’t mind wearing.

Ace your next day outdoors with our top three blocks.

Sun Bronze: SonageBronze: Sonäge Presage Moisturizer with SPF15 ($52 in the shop)

While lower in SPF, we like that this cream layers well under other sunscreens, anti-agers and makeup. The no-slick, non-comedogenic formula is great for daily use. Mineral blocks zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide an extra boost of protection against both UVA and UVB rays. In addition, naturally-derived hydrators, including jojoba and avocado, quench dry skin and antioxidants protect against free radical damage.

Sun Silver: SolielSilver: Soleil Toujours Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45 ($55 in the shop)

This standout sunscreen was formulated to provide high-level SPF coverage in luxe formula. Non-penetrating mineral filters sit on the surface to deflect light off of the skin — but you won’t see or feel a thing. The white cream blends beautifully, leaving a sheer, velvety-smooth finish. Its unique EcoSunComplex, which is powered by red algae, vitamin C ester, vitamin E, green tea extract and bisabolol, reduces UV-induced DNA damage and immunosuppression.

Sun Gold: Dr. Dennis GrossGold: Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Sheer Mineral Sun Spray SPF 50 ($42 in the shop)

Found: a spray-on sunblock you can feel comfortable using on your face, as well as your body. This sheer physical sunscreen avoids controversial ingredients and uses no chemical filters. It contains zinc oxide to block UVs, plus antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin B, resveratrol and ubiquinone to fight off free radicals. The spray is easy to apply and — this is key — reapply throughout the day. The super-fine mist is sheer and leaves no sticky or greasy residue.
