TIA Review Panel: Sciote Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum

TIA Review Panel: Sciote Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum

Looking for a serum that packs a serious punch, but isn’t bulking with fillers and preservatives? The guys in white labs coats at Sciote combine natural, plant-based ingredients with the latest technology and science. Sciote Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum ($105 in the shop) promises to reduce wrinkle depth by plumping up and smoothing the surface of skin, while stimulating collagen production to repair damaged tissue and tighten sagging skin. And it’s not just all talk: Inside you will find proven anti-agers, including Matrixyl 3000, hexapeptide-3, hyaluronic acid and a proprietary blend of amino acids.

Recently, a panel of five Truth In Aging community members put it the test. Did it pass? The results are in…

Valerie B, 40s

Even before trying any Sciote products, I was a fan of their clean ingredient deck, as well as their use of proven-effective active ingredients like peptides. I love natural beauty products and there are a lot of high-end ones these days, but many of these products primarily feature botanicals, oils and butters. Sciote takes it one step further and includes some heavy-hitters.

I was surprisingly impressed with this Sciote serum. To be honest, I didn’t think that I would be, despite its impressive list of ingredients, including Matrixyl 3000, hyaluronic acid and acetyl hexapeptide-3. I was so wrong to prejudge this product! What I noticed the most during my test of this serum is that it significantly impacted my crow’s feet. It also lessened my forehead lines a bit, too.

My only complaint is the inclusion of retinyl palmitate.  Studies have suggested that retinyl palmitate can become carcinogenic in sunlight. Because of this, I will only use this product in the evening while I would prefer to be able to use it twice a day. Nonetheless, the results have been notable, and I will happily slot it in as my night treatment.  I would highly recommend Sciote Skin Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum.

Cindy D, 50s

I am 58 years old with dry skin, moderate sun damage and wrinkling on my face and neck.  I began using this serum in hopes of softening the dry patches on my cheeks, lessening the lines around my lips and reducing the frown lines on my forehead. I also hoped to even my skin tone and increase firmness to areas, specifically the lower face and neck, that have begun to lose elasticity.

This product comes in a non-clogging pump dispenser that releases the prescribed amount of product each time. The serum is clear, free of any fragrance and has a smooth, non-sticky texture that applies easily over the skin. The recommended one- to three-pump amount provides adequate coverage on both my face and neck.

After six weeks of daily use, I noticed smoother skin with a reduction in the dry patches and small lines on my cheeks. In fact, these seemed to disappear within seconds after application. The deeper frown lines on my forehead are also much less noticeable.  There seemed to be an improvement in skin tone, which resulted in me being more comfortable wearing less — if any — makeup.  However, I did not notice any skin tightening. Maybe more time and dedication is required for this effect. I am very pleased with the results of this product and would definitely recommend it to others with mature skin.

Mark F, 50s

For over a year, my eye cream of choice has been Sciote Peptide+Defense Firming Eye Crème, and it has performed exceptionally well at hydrating and smoothing the area around my eyes, even firming it up a bit. Needless to say, I was happy to try Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum.  I have taken good care of my oily skin over the years, but now that I have passed 50, I know that I need to reintroduce a good anti-aging serum into my routine.  My goals are to improve my skin tone, as it tends to be a bit ruddy or uneven at times, and neck area.

This serum is heavy on peptides, such as Matrixyl 3000, and amino acids, both of which are ingredients that have worked well on my skin in the past. It has a nice, lightweight consistency that applied smoothly over slightly-damp skin after cleansing. A pump and a half was enough for my entire face and neck. It absorbed quickly without leaving any residue. The fact that this is so lightweight is key for me, as heavier formulas tend to cause breakouts.

Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum worked really well at hydrating my skin. My face didn’t seem as oily, so I do think it may have also helped a bit with regulating oil production.  The most noticeable improvement was that my face became more even in tone and smoother to the touch. However, I can’t say I have noticed any changes on my neck.  Also, there is a bit more plumpness to my face and, as another reviewer said, it can be more felt than seen. There is a slightly firmer feel after four weeks of use.  I’m very satisfied with the results I’ve seen and plan to keep this serum as part of my regular skin care routine.

Karen P, 60s

I maintain a very good skin care regimen, but now that I have turned 60 years old, my skin has become drier. I was very excited when asked to review the Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum, as I have tried other products in the Sciote line, and expected to maintain — perhaps even eliminate — the start of sagging skin.

I incorporated this serum into my routine by switching out the product that I typically use, Rejuvel 3D. The consistency is lightweight and has no detectable fragrance. Using two pumps of product to cover my face, neck and décolleté, it went on smoothly and absorbed easily. On application, it gave my skin a healthy glow that lasted the entire day. On the days that I wore makeup over the serum, it remained matte and the glow of my skin was still showing through!

I would have to say that my expectations for the product were met. My skin looked terrific, but I had high hopes for more tightening. It seemed to have only maintained the firmness that I had previously achieved, which isn’t necessarily bad. The particular proteins found in Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum are said to also help improved skin texture. Indeed, a small scar that I’ve had for a decade has begun to fade.

I would recommend this product to those who are looking for a great moisturizer that may offset the start of sagging skin. However, this may not be the best product if you are looking for a heavy-duty solution for sagging.

Peggy S, 60s

My skin is oily in the t-zone and dry on the remainder of my face. I have just started noticing fine lines right below the cheek and some sagging in my jowls, as well as deep furrows from frowning. I’ve taken good care of my skin over the years, but now that I just turned 60, it is more important than ever to find a serum that will help keep away wrinkles and sagging skin. This serum advertises that it will help dullness, wrinkles, sagging and uneven tone — all of which are areas I want to target and improve.

I stuck with my regular routine, applying the serum before moisturizer in the morning. The directions state to apply two to three pumps daily to the face, neck and décolleté. The first thing I noticed was that you did not need to apply much — a little goes a long way! It’s easy to pump out just the right amount. The serum has a very thin consistency and no odor, which is great as I cannot use scented products. Also, I noticed that when I applied moisturizer over the serum, it went on very smoothly. In fact, I didn’t seem to need as much moisturizer as I had previously used.

Overall, I do believe that there is a little more plumpness to my face and the lines on my cheeks appear softer than before. Maybe there would have been more of a difference if I had used the Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum twice a day. I will definitely consider purchasing it again to see if any further improvement occurs in my skin.
