What is Lemon Verbena Extract?

Lemon Verbena Extract is a purified and condensed version of dried lemon verbena leaves. Lemon verbena is grown around the world today – although it’s native to Argentina and Chile.

Another study in 2011 examined the connection between lemon verbena and joint health. The study was published in the November 2011 edition of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Over the course of a 9 week training program, 45 participants with joint problems took a combination of omega-3 fatty acids with lemon verbena or a placebo. After 3 to 4 weeks, participants claimed to experience a reduction in overall joint pain and an increase in mobility. Scientists believed that the ability for lemon verbena to reduce joint pain was linked to its high levels of antioxidants.

Enhances your Immune System

One final study on lemon verbena extract from 2012 showed that the extract could significantly reduce overall oxidative stress in athletes. That study lasted 21 days. Over the course of the 21 days, participants were instructed to take part in a moderate aerobic training program three days a week. Some of the participants took 1.8 grams of lemon verbena extract daily, while another group took a placebo.

By the end of the 21 day period, the lemon verbena extract group was found to have stronger white blood cells, which is a key indicator of a healthy immune system. These participants also exhibited fewer markers of oxidative stress. Scientists believe the reduced stress was linked to the high antioxidant content.

This study was published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports.

How to Use Lemon Verbena Extract

Lemon verbena and lemon verbena extract can be used in many different ways. Here are some of the ways in which people use their lemon verbena plants:

— Lemon Verbena Sun Tea: Cut and wash two handfuls of leaves, then stuff the leaves into a jar and let them sit in the sun for 3-4 hours.

— Salad: Slice the lemon verbena leaves into thin slices then put them in a salad or mix them with vegetables. They’ll provide a nice lemony zest to your meal.

— Make a Hot Tea: Bruise or cut up ¼ cup of lemon verbena leaves and mix with one cup of hot water. Let steep and enjoy. Consider adding mint to make a particularly delicious tea.

— Lemon Verbena Vinegar: Some people create their own lemon verbena-infused vinegar by chopping or bruising the leaves. Then, cover the leaves with a white wine vinegar and leave for 30 days.

— Lemon-Infused Olive Oil: Use the same method you used with the vinegar, but replace the vinegar with olive oil.

— Lemon Flavored Sugar: Do you like the flavor of lemon and the scent of lemon verbena? Make lemon flavored sugar by mixing bruised leaves into a bowl of sugar, then leave it overnight. Overnight, the sugar will absorb the oils in the verbena leaves to give you sugar a unique lemony taste.

How to Grow Lemon Verbena

Lemon verbena plants can be found all over the world. In America, the plants grow best in zones 9 and 10 but can survive in zone 8 if you provide protection from frost. Although the plant grows wild to up to 15 feet tall, you shouldn’t expect your lemon verbena plants to grow larger than 6 feet at their full maturity.

Lemon verbena is a heavy feeder plant that requires good drainage. The plant does not like soggy roots. Pruning is also very beneficial to the plant.

After harvesting your lemon verbena leaves, the best way to preserve the leaves is to dry them at home. Use a food dehydrator or hang the leaves upside down in a brown bag until they’re crisp (it takes 1-2 days).

Ultimately, lemon verbena is a popular plant that has demonstrated powerful proven benefits in its leaves due to its high levels of antioxidants.

Pure Glam Peppermint Grapefruit Hand & Foot Repair

This summer was the summer I fell in love with grapefruit: grapefruit beer, grapefruit fragrance and grapefruit body wash. My newfound love for grapefruit started the day I received the sample of Pure Glam Peppermint Grapefruit Hand & Foot Repair ($28). What a lovely product! So fresh, so fragrant, so invigorating and so effective.  

While it is called Hand & Foot Repair, it can actually be used all over the body. For the warm summer months, I found it a tad heavy to use on my body (it is super  nourishing and therapeutic). I look forward to using it in the fall and winter when my body skin becomes drier. 

The lotion came everywhere with me this summer: off to the mani/pedi salon where it felt like a cool summer breeze; in a little plastic container I kept filling so I could use it on the go. And after a day at the beach when my body felt slightly sun and wind burned, the lotion felt amazing and cooling.

My two teenage boys are NOT into any kind of hand and foot maintenance whatsoever but really enjoyed when I applied this product to their hands and feet. What’s not to love? Shea butter and aloe vera help heal and repair dry skin; rhatany root extract is anti-microbial, anti inflammatory and helps tissue repair, perfect for the person who has dry, calloused feet and hands (basically, everyone over the age of 12)! The peppermint, spearmint, lemon and grapefruit essential oils contain anti-fungal properties and a scent that makes you feel like you’re in the south of France! Sunflower seed oil, orange peel wax and beeswax moisturize dry, distressed skin.   

Most of  ingredients are certified organic and the product is vegan and gluten free.

ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum

I had never heard of the brand ExPürtise and being a big believer in serums, I was excited to try something new. I’m 52 years old and blessed to have good skin, partly due to genetics from my Hispanic grandmother and regular appointments with my dermatologist and esthetician. I didn’t know the price or read any reviews of ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum ($120 in the shop) before testing so I went into this test with no bias. One of the rules for being a TIA tester is that we are not allowed to do anything different during the testing phase. I was due for my quarterly Botox appointment that I had to postpone until after my jar of serum was finished. 

One of the tell-tale signs of “it’s time for some Botox” is when applying eyeliner, if I don’t wait for it to dry with my eyes closed it will smudge verses when my eyes are lifted (after Botox) there isn’t any upper eyelid getting in the way. For women over 50 you know what I’m talking about — for you youngsters, your time will come. But two weeks into using ExPürtise Anti-Aging Face Serum I noticed I wasn’t having that problem anymore. Does it take the place of Botox? Sadly no, as it didn’t have the same noticeable effect on my forehead. But let’s be honest, that’s a lot more skin to lift and it would be unrealistic to compare an injectable to a topical treatment. 

I was religious about applying it every morning for 30 days – and almost as strict at night — however, I did miss a couple of evening applications.

This serum has some impressive ingredients, including Matrixyl 3000, a peptide that, in one study, was shown to have doubled the amount of protein collagen. There are also plenty of vitamins and antioxidants, which fight off free radicals. Plus, hyaluronic acid keeps skin hydrated. I also noticed the serum has apple stem cells, which is something I don’t see often. They are said to have anti-aging properties and reduce wrinkles!

Another plus factor for me, which is just a personal preference, is that there is no perfume smell, which is a BIG turn off when using any facial products. I liked the clean, silky texture that quickly absorbed into my skin and worked well with my eye cream, moisturizer and sunscreen. The pump allowed me to control how much I wanted use — and I always used a full pump for my face and another full pump for my neck. But for those who don’t want a full pump you can dispense a small amount.

Now that my testing phase is complete I finally allowed myself to look up the company and their claims about ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum — which they say will “energize, revitalize and rejuvenate one’s skin for a more youthful appearance.” And I have to agree — It works! I did notice an improvement! My skin was smoother, firmer, and my happiest surprise was the lift and firmness to my eyelids.

For me the bottom line is if I would pay full price for this product since my jar is now empty. It’s not the cheapest serum out there, but I am willing to pay a premium for a serum that works. This one does. Like many of you, I have paid big bucks for lotions and potions thinking that because they are expensive they must be effective, only to be disappointed with the end results. I’ve used many, and I mean many, products over the years and I am happy to say you can purchase ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum with confidence knowing it will not be a waste of your money. The end results after a 30 day testing period? ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum gets a rating of 5 stars.

Body Lotions Uncovered - My Latest Finds and Rejects

What’s so hard about body lotion? Why is this category the poor relation of the beauty market? Why are body butters thick and gloopy? Why are lotions thin concoctions of mediocre ingredients? And then there’s all those body lotions that are really perfume in cream form. I’ve only ever found one anti-aging body lotion worthy of the name (Stemulation’s Relance) and I was beginning to think that if I ever found another it would be like having an out of body experience.

I began my quest with a little research on the challenge of making a good body lotion. The stratum corneum is thicker on the body than the face, so topical treatments with fancy anti-aging ingredients can’t easily penetrate. Body skin also has fewer oil glands and dries easily. Plus, there’s all that surface area — making it costly for formulators and consumers alike to attain the Holy Grail of effective anti-aging body lotion.

Still, I decided to go out on a limb and find some truly anti-aging body lotions. You know, there’s really not a lot out there. So here are my results — rejects and those that deemed worthy of testing. And if you have any to add to the list do let me know.

Rejected

Elizabth Arden Prevage Body Total Transforming Anti-Aging Moisturizer ($135)

Years ago a member of the Truth In Aging community gave Prevage Body a positive review. Revisiting it today, I think I’ll take a pass since overall the good things reside with too many bad or problematic ingredients. The good includes Prevage’s signature ubiquinone, a powerful antioxidant, tripeptide 1, moisturizing phospholipids and an interesting skin whitening agent, octadecenedioic acid. But against these are every peptide known to man, plus just about every other harsh preservative, no-nos like sodium laureth sulfate and quite a lot of silicone.

Skin Care L de L Retinol Anti-Aging Body Lotion ($16.99)

I went out of my way to hunt down some body lotions with retinol and turned up this reasonably priced one on sale at Ulta. Unfortunately, the ingredients list looks as if it has been tipped upside down with dominant ingredients being preservatives and the actives straggling at the end. And then there’s some ingredients that are a mystery to me as to why they are in a cosmetic cream, such as trimethylolpropane tricaprylate/tricaprate, used for curing plastics, glue and ink.

Chantecaille Retinol Body Treatment ($96)

At the other end of the price spectrum is Chantecaille and, of course, this retinol body lotion is altogether more refined.

Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-aging Body Lotion $4.99-$8.99

To see the antioxidant niacinamide as the third ingredient is a reminder of how Olay manages to stand out as a low cost drug store brand. And then there’s a slew of amino acids. Pretty impressive. The problem is that petrolatum, a cheap by-product of the oil industry, is also dominant and there are parabens abound along with harsh ingredients such as sodium hydroxide.

Selected for testing

Wilma Schumann Body Contouring Serum ($60)

I had high hopes for this body lotion that also tackles cellulite. Most of the ingredients are excellent. I especially like the unusual use of English ivy, an ingredient that was recently discovered to act as a sunscreen. Horse chestnut is believed to be helpful for broken veins and a thoughtful complex of caffeine, L-carnitine and coenzyme A is there to smooth dimpled thighs. A pity about the use of parebens though. After much back and forth with myself, I decided to give this a go on the grounds that parabens are controversial but not unequivocally proven to lead to cancer. Other preservatives are as bad if not worse. Furthermore, when we polled the Truth In Aging community 50% said they were ok about using products with parabens.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Body ($110)

I bought a bottle of this and started using it earlier this week. It’s too soon to tell what it’s going to do and I can only report that it is a light, easily absorbed lotion that is pleasant to use. Certainly the formula has potential with Perricone’s signature DMAE, which is supposed to have skin firming properties, as the most dominant ingredient after water. As always, Perricone’s choice of actives are interesting with phosphatidylcholine, a kind lecithin that is anti-inflammatory and the super-antioxidant astaxanthin. It isn’t perfect — unnamed fragrance, a PEG, alcohol and usual preservatives — but it is certainly intriguing.

EO Certified Organic Body Serum 02 Restorative ($21.99)

This struck me as a decently priced all-natural body lotion. Although it calls itself a serum, I’m not sure that I will find it a potent anti-ager. However, the blend of argan and avocado oils, reinforced with vitamin E, looks nourishing.

One Love Gardenia & Tea Antioxidant Body Serum ($39)

We already like the Elizabeth Dehn for One Love Organics products and I was intrigued by this “body serum” that is actually a spray. The idea of spraying the body could be genius, although perhaps more of a summer product. Green tea is a given, but I was pleased to see that there is also sea buckthorn, antioxidant seaweed and pumpkin.

What is Folicure?

Folicure is a lineup of about 9 different hair products, including a shampoo, conditioner, gel, hair spray, and moisturizer. The shampoo is the core product in the lineup.

The products are priced reasonably, with all Folicure products priced between $5 and $7.

The company claims that the unique Folicure formula will “transform your fine tresses into thick, full luscious.” The secret behind the power of Folicure lies in its proteins and herbal extracts. Here’s how Folicure’s manufacturer describes the formula:

“Folicure infuses your hair with strengthening soy protein, pantethine and jojoba oil along with a few soothing herbs.”

By using the shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer, you can boost the health of your hair – or at least that’s the idea.

Folicure stops short of claiming that it can cure balding – but many people buy it specifically for that purpose. Instead of claiming that it can reverse hair loss, the company makes claims that Folicure will moisturize, strengthen, and thicken your hair.

In other words, don’t use Folicure expecting a miracle cure for balding.

The Folicure for Fine or Thinning Hair, for example, is specially designed to stimulate the scalp by removing sebum, which leads to thicker, fuller-looking hair. You’re supposed to use it in conjunction with the shampoo. First, you shampoo your hair using the Folicure shampoo or any “mild pH balanced shampoo”. Then, you part your hair into one inch sections and apply the Folicure Formula along the partings. You massage the formula into your scalp gently, then rinse it out and dry.

Folicure Ingredients

The full list of Folicure ingredients can be found on their website. The shampoo, for example, contains natural ingredients like jojoba seed oil along with rosemary extract, basil, parsley extract, and a number of synthetic formula like sodium laureth sulfate and disodium cocoamphodiacetate.
