As a post-menopausal 52-year-old with fair skin, I have a long history of freckles and sun spots. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the Elena Rubin Lighten Up serum ($119 in the shop).
Lighten Up is a yellow serum with a strong scent of witch hazel. The product is contained in a dark glass bottle and has a dropper for easy application. It blends nicely into skin and causes no issues with other products — my sunscreen applied smoothly over top.
The ingredients include known skin-lighteners arbutin, kojic acid, daisy flower extract and bearberry extract, plus proprietary Tyrostat to reduce skin pigmentation and reddening. With this kind of ingredient list, it is easy to see how this serum got its higher price tag. But after a month of use, I didn’t notice any visible improvement of my darks spots. I followed the application instructions — using it morning and night — then implemented the extra step of rubbing it directly over spots after reading another reviewer’s suggestions. Still nothing.
Maybe this is a product in which you have to be “in it” for the long haul to see results. There’s still a lot of serum left in the bottle, so I’m continuing use with the hope that all the natural inhibitors will take effect and make a difference I can see. At this point, though, I would not repurchase.
