Viviscal Review – Does It Work?
Viviscal is a lineup of hair growth supplements and hair care products that promise to give women thicker, fuller-looking hair. Read our Viviscal review to see if it actually works as advertised.
What is Viviscal?
Viviscal is a lineup of hair growth and hair care products marketed mostly towards women (although the company does offer a product called Viviscal Man as well).
Viviscal promises to give users thicker, fuller-looking hair using a 100% drug-free formula. The core Viviscal formula consists of nutritional supplements. You take the supplements daily to promote hair growth from the inside out.
The company claims that its work is backed by 25 years of research and development along with 7 clinical studies. The company is also endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow. The sales page for Viviscal claims that “Gwyneth swears by a steady supply of Viviscal hair growth supplements.”
How Does Viviscal Work?
Viviscal works by nourishing thinning hair while promoting existing hair growth from within. It claims to target some of the root causes of hair loss, including stress, poor nutrition, heredity, environmental damage, and simple aging.
Here’s how the makers of Viviscal explain how it works:
“If your diet lacks specific nutrients, including vitamins, minerals or protein, it can affect the condition and strength of your hair. Viviscal dietary supplements supply vital nutrients to the hair follicle to prolong the anagen (growing) phase of the hair growth cycle, promoting existing hair growth.”
You’ll need to take Viviscal for several months to notice any change in hair growth. The manufacturer claims that some users will see a difference in “as little as three or four months”, but most people will take longer to notice any effects.
In any case, Viviscal works in four stages, including:
Stage 1) Nourish hair follicles from within
Stage 2) Strengthen and promote the growth of existing hair
Stage 3) Promotes the growth of hair that has slowed or stopped growing
Stage 4) Hair is noticeably stronger, healthier, and more vibrant

Viviscal Ingredients
Viviscal uses slightly different ingredients for its male and female formulas. Most of the formulas, however, contain the following active ingredients:
-AminoMar: Proprietary marine complex exclusive to Viviscal supplements clinically proven to promote existing hair growth. AminoMar is one of the key components in all Viviscal suppleemnts. The story behind Viviscal is that a professor was studying the Inuit in the 1980s and discovered that they had great hair and skin. He theorized that it was a result of their protein-rich fish diet, which gave them plenty of proteins and fatty acids. That professor isolated the key protein molecules from the diet and used them to create AminoMar.
-Vitamin C: Powerful antioxidant that helps to absorb more iron in the blood, which facilitates further hair growth.
-Zinc: Promotes the healthy division of hair follicle cells. Zinc deficiency can lead to the deterioration of hair structure, which can lead to hair loss.
-Horsetail Plant Extract: Horsetail plant is naturally rich with silica, an important mineral that’s connected to stronger, fuller-looking hair
-Flax Seed Extract: A good source of omega 3 fatty acids, which help to strengthen hair and reduce your risk of hair loss.

Does Viviscal Actually Work?
Can you really take a nutritional supplement to boost your hair growth? All Viviscal pages come with asterisks scattered across the page. These asterisks reference a section at the bottom that says “Specific results are not guaranteed and results may vary.” That asterisk appears after every single time the page mentions the word “growth” – so the company is very careful not to guarantee hair growth.
Nevertheless, there appears to be some evidence that Viviscal works as advertised. 7 clinical trials have reinforced the benefits of Viviscal. You can learn more about those clinical trials here: http://ift.tt/1pDdClp
In those trials, researchers measured the following metrics:
- -18.3% reduction in hair shedding after 3 months
- -46% average reduction in hair loss after 10 weeks
- -75.3% of participants reported a significant decrease in hair loss
- -111% increase in terminal hairs after 3 months
- -The greatest improvement in hair growth and thickness occurred within the first 2 months of usage
The studies involved a total of approximately 120 female subjects and took place between 2012 and 2014. Some of the studies lasted 6 months in length. They were all placebo-controlled, double-blind studies – which is what we always like to see from a reputable manufacturer.
The studies also appear to have been led by independent doctors. You can see their names and practice information at the page linked above.
Ultimately, Viviscal doesn’t want to guarantee hair regrowth. But they offer scientific evidence that appears to show that the Viviscal formula works on the majority of users.

Should You Use Viviscal to Promote Thicker, Fuller Hair?
Viviscal is a hair growth formula that works in two ways: you take a nutritional supplement to repair your hair from the inside out, and then you apply topical shampoos to heal your hair from the outside in.
Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials appear to show that the products work as advertised. Participants in these trials were legitimately able to enhance the thickness and fullness of their hair.
Viviscal isn’t guaranteed to work. And in clinical trials, it appears to have worked on about 75% of patients. Still, that’s better than most hair care supplements we see sold online. If you’re looking for an easy way to regrow your hair from two directions, then Viviscal may be exactly what you’re looking for.
