Best of 2015: Marta's Pick

‘Tis the season for the annual Truth In Aging best of the best awards. We will be awarding the title of “Best of 2015” to anti-aging skin care products in the categories of Eye Serum or Cream, Marta’s Pick, Most Innovative Formula, Product Under $100, New Product Launch, Body Treatment, Hair Product, Readers’ Pick and Product of the Year.

Over the coming days, I’ll be announcing the “Best of 2015” for products that have been lovingly formulated with heavy-hitting active ingredients or innovative approaches that truly deliver on their bold anti-aging claims. To continue our awards season…. Drum roll….. Here’s my favorite anti-aging product of 2015:

Dr. Dennis Gross Original Alpha Beta Peel

Back in August I had been getting to know Dr. Dennis Gross Original Alpha Beta Peel ($88, in the shop) for about a month and was happy to reveal that I loved them. Now four months on, I would say that this product is no less than transformative. Of everything new that I have tried this year, it is the one that has made the most difference. I’m on my third pack. 

My skin is much more radiant. Fine lines are fading. I am especially pleased by my lip lines, which I pay extra attention to with the pads. Same for my diminishing (subtly but incontrovertibly) leopard spot on my right cheekbone. And contrary to my fear that a daily peel would make my skin dryer or thinner, it is plumper, firmer and healthier.  

This extraordinary product has made me a convert to a process called microexfoliation, critical to healthy and younger looking skin. Cells reproduce in the epidermal junction where they are held together by lipids, ceramides and long chain fatty acids. We are constantly shedding and regenerating, but as we age, the turnover rate of our cells slows down. Young cells gradually migrate to the skin surface where they die. Exfoliation removes those dead cells and speeds the process of skin cell turnover.

Although it is an additional step in my daily routine, ease of use of the two-step process of pre-soaked towelettes. It takes just a few swipes over the neck and face and then, after leaving for two minutes (the time it takes to clean my teeth), the second pad is applied evenly for a deeper effect.

Step one uses alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), including glycolic, citric, lactic and malic, plus one beta hydroxy acid (BHA), salicylic acid. It is worth noting that BHAs go a bit deeper than AHAs and will loosen dead cells that are lodged deep in the pores. Step neutralizes the acids in step one and brings to the party two forms of vitamin C, vitamin A (retinol and retinyl palmitate), vitamin E, water retaining phospholipids, resveratrol and ubiquinone.

These pads are Dr. Gross’ signature product, a daily dose of the peels that put his New York office at the center of the dermatological map. I can’t imagine being without them.
