Once a year I revisit a previous Five Best selection and consider whether I can update it. Products that address sagging skin have a huge challenge and so I was wondering if we really had found enough new ones to update our Five Best for sagging skin. I took a look at our recent finds and couldn’t have had less reason to worry. In fact, we are spoiled for choice between some stellar favorites and new discoveries. So I need your help. Please let me know which of these you’ve tried and how we can get this Top Ten whittled down to a Five Best for sagging skin.
Medik8 Firewall ($145 in the shop). Medik8 Firewall is firm (pun intended) favorite for a reason. I have found it helps with those pouches around the mouth that have a tendency to sag. I give credit to the hefty concentration of copper peptides. Copper is the key mineral in lysyl oxidase, an enzyme that weaves together collagen and elastin. And there’s collagen-boosting Matrixyl 3000 as well.
ASDM Beverly Hills Lifting Contour Serum ($65 in the shop). A decently priced serum that brings instant as well as long-term gratification. Vitamin C in the form of MAP takes center stage and is more than ably backed up by Matrixyl 3000, sodium hyaluronate and honey. Truth In Aging community reviewer, Sarah, proclaimed that it made a real difference in the firming department.
BRAD Biophotonic Ultra Elastin Sculpting Firming Cream Complex ($195 in the shop). BRAD tackles sagging skin with a combination of exfoliation and skin cell boosters. There is a multi-vitamin C complex and a blend of glycolic and lactic acid bio-ferments to regenerate and plump the skin. Coenzyme Q10 stimulates cellular function, phospholipids strengthen skin’s barrier function. For most this will do double duty as a serum and moisturizer.
Sciote Peptide+Defense Firming Youth Serum ($105 in the shop). My skin does well with amino acids and initially I thought that this serum would be good for radiance, but not necessarily for firming. I was wrong. It does extremely well in the finger-tapping test (smartly rap tip of finger against cheek and take note of resilience). As well as the aforementioned amino acids, there’s Matrixyl 3000 and a plant-derived alternative to sodium hyaluronate.
Deciem NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 1.00% ($60 in the shop). I’m a big believer in copper peptides and Deciem had me at hello with a 1% concentration. Hi-impact What makes NIOD’s face serum neat is that it packages the copper tripeptide-1 part of the formula separately and you mix it with what they call an activator, a copper salt from two more amino acids. There are additional peptides here and, for me, novel ones that include a kind that mimics retinol (but without the downsides).
Dr. Dennis Gross Triple C Peptide Firming Oil ($62 in the shop). This is a standout product as far as I am concerned. I originally started to use it for lip lines, but soon discovered that its firming effects were useful everywhere. All good things come in threes and there are three types of vitamin C, as well as three peptides that boost collagen and the extracellular matrix. One of these peptides is a relatively new one called TEGO Pep 4-17 that has a small molecular size and penetrates the skin well.
Your Best Face Control ($160 in the shop). Control contains Syn-Hycan, which is aimed at lifting sagging skin. This peptide stimulates hyaluronan (HA) synthesis and expression of the proteoglycans, decorin and lumican. Another key active is Relistase. This is actually a tripeptide and inhibits elastase activity and boosts collagen 1 synthesis. It has also been designed to treat sagginess and restore firmness to the skin.
Stemulation Hi-impact ($185 in the shop). Hi-Impact’s well-chosen ingredient list kicks off with pseudoalteromonas exopolysaccharides. This is an interesting ingredient that comes from a strain of bacteria found in Antarctica. Research suggests that it is really good at retaining water and it may also help boost collagen. But the real star is the growth factor sH-oligopeptide-1.
Truth Vitality Lux Renew ($279 in the shop). Topical serums still have a way to go before they will be the be all and end all for sagging skin. So I reach for my Lux Renew with LED and ultrasound to plump and firm the skin. These technologies work by encouraging cells to produce collagen. In our independent clinical trials, Lux Renew more than proved itself as a skin firmer: according to expert evaluation, 79.3% showed improvement in skin firmness and according to instrumental evaluation (cutometer), 100% of participants showed improvement in skin firming.
MitoQ Moisturizing Anti-Aging Serum ($119 in the shop). MitoQ is a very good wrinkle reducer. It is the best eraser of horizontal forehead lines that I have come across. It also helps in the firming department. Unlike other antioxidants, MitoQ was developed to target mitochondria, the energy source for all living cells. It is by focusing on mitochondria that MitoQ bases its claim of being 1,000 times stronger than other antioxidants.
