Maintaining personal fitness, health and wellness can take a significant investment of time and money. The cost of maintaining a daily fitness practice can be a great challenge for people who do not have a lot of disposable income. Anyone who attempts to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle has to find a way to manage the expenses of exercise classes, training equipment, health insurance and the options that exist for adequate nutrition and hydration.
Choosing to be a healthy individual is much more difficult when you factor in the commitment and expenditures related to maintaining a family and/or a career. Attempting to keep up with the cost of a gym membership or a fitness class plan can sometimes feel like it is just one more financial obligation that many people are forced to endure. Those are just a few of the reasons for the transient nature of the consumer base of the health and wellness industry.
Planet Fitness seems to want to cater to individuals who are not fitness fanatics, may have some financial limits but still have a desire to maintain their personal health and wellness. This review will strive to help readers determine if Planet Fitness is a gym that can adequately assists novice or casual gym users in achieving a proper balance. Can they help people gain equilibrium with regard to the financial and time obligations that a gym membership and healthy lifestyle requires?
What Is Planet Fitness?
Planet Fitness markets itself as a “Judgement Free Zone” that caters to novice and casual gym users. The company is based in Newington, New Hampshire – but currently has 1000 club locations across the US. There has also been recent expansion into Canada and the Dominican Republic. Planet Fitness is also the national gym sponsor of NBC’s reality show, The Biggest Loser.
Contestants on the show work out with Planet Fitness instructors on Planet Fitness equipment while at The Biggest Loser Ranch in Calabasas, California. Near the end of a given television show, the contestants will exercise at Planet Fitness gyms near their own homes. In addition, Planet Fitness has formed a partnership with the popular entertainer 50 Cent to sell his energy drink “Street King.”
How Did Planet Fitness Start?
The Planet Fitness brand was founded in 1992. Back then, entrepreneur Michael Grondahl had the idea to create a low-cost business model that addresses the needs of the occasional or first-time health club member in contrast to the more experienced individual gym members. So Mr. Grondahl acquired a financially struggling gym chain, dramatically reduced prices and instituted some modifications to the rules that determine health club membership in order to compete against the better-known gym brands.
The Planet Fitness franchise has expanded over the years into a nationwide franchise that includes 53 corporate-owned gyms – with the rest being independently owned and operated. The company continues to grow, having been recently added to the Inc. 500 list.
How Is Planet Fitness Different?
Many of the people who make up the consumer base of the health and wellness industry can spend years jumping from one fitness club to another in an attempt to mitigate the price of fitness class plans, fitness gear and transportation costs. This constant economic dance can leave people feeling like creatures who are constantly chasing their own tails in search of a gym membership that works. Furthermore, there is a definitive gym culture in America that the average working individual may feel physically intimidated by or mentally alienated from.
Planet Fitness claims to be able to provide a unique environment in which anyone can be comfortable. Their current corporate campaign promotes a “Judgement Free Zone” where the casual gym goer can inculcate a lifestyle built around physical activity and wellness that is long-lasting. The company aims to help people by having them view Planet Fitness as a “tool” or a means to and end instead of a life altering brand name.
The Planet Fitness Cost
Planet Fitness claims to have transformed the fitness industry with extremely low prices and unique offers for a variety of benefits, including providing free pizza on the first Monday of every month. The company also presents free bagels on the second Tuesday of every month. Planet Fitness promotes the food endowments as a member appreciation gesture and a reminder to their clients that it is okay to provide a treat to themselves for their hard work every once in a while.
New members can join any Planet Fitness location in the United States and Canada for as little as $10 a month, The company offers the PF Black Card® membership, which is $19.99 a month. This membership includes additional amenities such as the ability to bring a guest every day at no additional charge, access to any and all international Planet Fitness locations and access to massage beds, massage chairs and tanning.
Critical Facts
There have been a number of minor controversies that revolve around Planet Fitness’ claim to be a “Judgement Free Zone.” In March 2015 a Michigan woman had her membership at Planet Fitness revoked after complaining to management that a transgender woman was using the women’s locker room at her local gym. In March of 2014, a women asked for a refund of her membership dues after she was told that her very toned and sleek body was “too fit” to be in a revealing outfit at a California Planet Fitness gym.
Finally, in October 2011, a New Mexico Planet Fitness refused to let a woman wear her religious head covering while working out.
Critics have also questioned Planet Fitness’ legitimacy as a gym on the basis of the quality of their equipment and lack of intensity in the fitness classes that the company offers. Others claim that the Planet Fitness practice of giving out free food is contradictory with their standing as a fitness institution.
Is Planet Fitness Worth The Cost?
The health and wellness industry’s primary mission is to help people to feel good physically and mentally. But time and money are resources that many people do not have adequate access to.
Planet Fitness seeks to create an affordable, hassle-free and non-intimidating environment as part of the company’s overall strategy to market itself to the general public.
